Shadow is a cat who loves his family. However, he also loves watching and chasing birds. When Shadow’s family moves to a new country home, Shadow falls into the temptation of running after a bird outside. He ends up lost with no idea of where he is in this new countryside. So begins Shadow’s adventure as he tries to find his way back to the family he loves. It’s not an easy journey, but in the end, Shadow learns that home and family are the most important things of all.

Shadow’s Adventure Home by Kathy Kovar is a short picture book for young readers. It’s very simple with cute illustrations, so I think it would really appeal to babies and toddlers. I do imagine, however, that many kids will want to return to this story over and over again as they grow up. It would be a great book to help introduce reading to children as the language is very simple.

I found Shadow’s Adventure Home to be an exceptionally well-edited and beautifully concise little story. Though it is a kid’s book, it does have some depth as it explores more complex emotions like sadness and loneliness. Yet, it appropriately ends on a cheerful note that children will love.

I really could not find anything to criticize in this book. I did find one word, “proactive,” to be a little too advanced for children, but as it is only a single complicated word, I think it could be easily explained by a parent without interrupting the story. Other than that, the book was very easy to read and enjoy.

Overall, this is a great book for little children. It is a captivating story with twists and turns for young readers to enjoy and I think even parents will look forward to reading it with their kids. I give it four out of four stars.

Children's books that help them explore their emotions and understand them better are always a welcome addition to my bookshelf. Thanks for the recommendation!
