Review of Katie Kool and The Monster in the Garden Shed
Katie Kool and the Monster in the Garden Shed by Doreen M. Atkinson is a children's book following two little dog detectives, Katie Kool and her trusty sidekick, Daisy Duzz, on their quest to solve crimes and mysteries in the animal world.
The story begins with the pair of pups lounging in the sun when suddenly a terrifying cry comes from the garden shed. They put on their detective hats and go to work figuring out who or what is making the terrifying noises. The pair conducts interviews with all of the animals in the vicinity of the shed, as true detectives would. Katie Kool interviews Mrs. Spinny Spider and her husband, Artie Anthropoid, while Daisy Duzz interviews the chipmunks, Chit and Chat. To ensure the safety of the animals living on the farmland, the pair must determine who is trapped in the shed, or what might be trapped in there.
I enjoyed this story very much. I was surprised by how suspenseful a child’s book could be. The author does a good job at keeping the details surrounding what is in the garden shed secret until the dogs are able to piece together the clues. Since children's books are generally simple, it can be difficult to create suspense in them. However, the author did a great job here.
The book begins with an introduction to the main characters, Katie Kool and Daisy Duzz. The introduction explains who the characters are and how they received their nicknames. I like how the author bolded the names of the characters when they first appeared so that the reader could come back and find the description quickly.
The author was very descriptive in her use of words to describe scenes and the animals. The abundance of descriptive words works great in a children's book as it helps children work through scenes in their heads. I also enjoyed the funny terms that were included, such as "sleuth" and "sleuthing." It may be the child in me, but "sleuth" always makes me laugh.
This book was exceptionally edited. I did not find any spelling or grammatical errors in this book. I did not find anything I did not like about this book. As such, I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. This book was written for children who have just passed the beginning stages of learning to read and are beginning with chapter books. While this book is not a true chapter book, it will be good for children beginning their reading adventures.
