Farmer Beau’s Farm by Kathleen Geiger is a whimsical children’s story about some very special animals living on a farm. Farmer Beau and his wife are excited one day to discover six little kittens playing on their farm just outside of town. But as the kittens grow older, they leave the farm one by one. This saddens Farmer Beau and Bamma, his wife, who were doing everything they could to entice the kittens to stay.

Then there only remains one kitten on the farm, and they were determined this one would stay. They name her Kailey and build her a cozy home in the shed. Kailey decides to stay, as she is warm and never hungry or thirsty. This leaves Farm Beau and his wife feeling overjoyed.

Soon a rabbit by the name of Sammy joins Kailey on the farm, and they become fast friends. But they soon find out that there’s one more who will be joining them. Who could it be? Kailey and Sammy brainstorm, but they are completely taken by surprise by the newest arrival on the farm.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whimsical illustrations in this book and the story behind them. The author explains how her own granddaughters picked the animals in this book, as well as the color for each. This adds some unexpected depth to this neat little story. I also liked the message portrayed. It is a solid one that says everyone can be friends and get along, no matter what your differences are. I only found one noticeable error during my read and feel that this story is well edited.

I found nothing at all to dislike about this book. It passes along a great message of inclusion and family ties not being just about blood. And it explained these messages in a cute and easily understood way. As a result, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I believe that this book is well-deserving of this rating, as I found it to be quite an outstanding read that I would happily read to my own child.

I believe this book would be suitable for all children to read, or have read to them. Many will surely be delighted by Kailey, a magnificently purple kitten. They will most likely also be delighted by the other animals in this book as well. There was also no potentially offensive content in this book that could upset a parent or child.

It is a metaphor for a tale about acceptance, the dangers of prejudice, open minds and generosity of spirit. A positive review!
