Review of Toni the Superhero
[Following is a volunteer review of "Toni the Superhero" by R.D. Base.]
Toni the Superhero is a 2018 children’s book written by R.D. Base and illustrated by Debbie Hefke. The book has 30 pages and is full of colorful pictures. It stresses that anyone is a superhero who lives a righteous life.
Little Toni has many superpowers, but he doesn’t have to use them all the time to feel accomplished. He knows how to help people without using his super abilities as well. He likes to read books. He enjoys different activities with friends and family. Superhero or not, he has all the qualities of a good kid.
There is not much happening to add to the storyline. It mostly describes the qualities of a kind and dependable kid. The illustrations are lovely and perfectly complement the narrative. The narrative is plain and straightforward. It relies on simple sight words in a repetitive pattern. Hence, it makes for a good option for early readers or kindergartners. Parents can read this to their preschoolers at bedtime. Conversely, they can let them enjoy the bright and beautiful illustrations during playtime. It will inspire children to help others around them, like Toni.
Older kids may appreciate the message and the images. However, the language looks too simple to appeal to kids 8 years and older. So, I will not recommend it to them. The author did a laudable job of providing the kids with a black superhero from an early age. Toni is probably one of the few black superheroes to represent a multiethnic environment. Hence, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.
There is no instance of profanity, vulgarity, or sociocultural insensitivity in this book. It is appropriate for children of any religious background. It appears perfectly edited and proofread. I did not find a single error and there is nothing to dislike about this book.
