Review of Nikki's World: the Dog Walk
Most of the time, we just don't get to understand how our dogs behave. We don't understand what they are saying, what they are thinking about, or what they need. For instance, we may not understand what a dog is up to when it heads to the door whilst looking at us. Dain Taylor talks about how he interacts with his dog called Nikki in his book, Nikki's World: The Dog Walk.
The thing that I love most about the book is, undoubtedly, its content. It uniquely speaks about what dogs' thoughts, emotions, and intents are when they behave in certain ways, for example, barking and moving restlessly around the room. We almost always misinterpret these behaviors and unfairly treat our dogs in ways they shouldn't be treated. For instance, when the author finds something ruined, he thinks it is Nikki that did it when in reality it is the cat, Atlas, that caused the mess. Nikki in defense tries pointing at the cat to prove his innocence.
On the same note, the book holds the view that dogs aren't slaves. They also always want to be taken for a walk and allowed to play with toys and other people. Nikki becomes happy when the author allows him to play with the dolls and the unicorn.
I also love the occasional sarcasm and humor. The author at one point says Nikki is nothing but a 'child puppy.' Nikki replies sarcastically that he is thirty-five dog years and not a mere child or puppy anymore. Also, when Nikki complains about the dog trainer making him sit for unnecessarily long while teaching him dog obedience, he (Nikki) suggests that he (Nikki) is the one who should, in fact, be teaching them a lesson on 'Train-Your-Dog 101.'
I, however, think it would have been better for Nikki to call the author any other name that is friendlier than 'master.' The name to me sounds harsh and seems to denote oppression rather than a relationship between a dog and its owner. However, I accept that this is a matter of preference.
The book deserves 4 out of 4 stars. Its content is interesting to me, and I love the sarcasm and humor in it.
This book is especially perfect for parents who want to teach their children in the first or the second grade (or those who are around this age bracket) how to interact with their pets. Any other person who may be interested may also read the book.
