Review of Thunder and Lightning, They're Not So Frightening
Though I’m fascinated by the magnificent dance of nature as it illuminates the sky, it can be frightening for younger minds. The book Thunder and Lightning, They’re Not So Frightening by JD Schmitt was created by the author to help children understand storms better.
The story starts with a young boy beginning his nightly routine of sitting in bed watching houses in town light up as the sun goes down. Then suddenly, the signs of a storm brewing begin to frighten him. Patiently, his father cuddles him in his lap and answers the questions in his child’s mind. What are thunder and lightning? How are they made? Are they dangerous? These questions and more will be answered as you read the scientific explanations of these radiant flashes in the sky, as well as the thunderous boom they are accompanied by.
I admire the enlightening aspects of this book, as some of the information I was not previously aware of. Furthermore, this story allows for the exploration of emotions and feelings such as enjoyment, calmness, being frightened, loved, and sleepy. The descriptive dialog allows the reader to feel as if they are there watching the storm with William and his father.
This book was remarkably well-edited, I did not notice any errors. In reality, I did not find any negative aspects as it was informative, well written, descriptive, and beautifully illustrated. As a result of this, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
Since I'm a preschool teacher, I truly value books such as this. They allow children to fully understand situations thus, allowing them to realize under certain circumstances things may not be as frightening as they appear. I would recommend this book to teachers, parents, grandparents, and anyone with a child that might be frightened by a storm or would like to explore the science behind it.

I agree, it is great for curious minds, and I like the calm tone too.Yulisa Sanchez wrote: ↑20 Dec 2021, 10:00 Educational and informative, this book sounds great for curious minds about storms, thunder and lightning. I especially like how calm the tone of the book is to try to dispel the fear of storms by kids. Thanks for the great review!
