Review of Picky The Pelican
This is a cute story about an unusual friendship between different species of animals - a pelican and a pufferfish. Although not scientifically accurate, the message of Picky the Pelican is meaningful and should spark discussions about diversity and acceptance.
I was drawn to the beachy colors on the cover and was delighted to see that the theme is carried throughout the book's 31 pages. Edward Christina, author and illustrator, blends the text and the drawings to create a book that is best shared with an adult as the narrator. I enjoyed the animated faces and how the emotions of the creatures were portrayed.
My favorite part is that the rhyme scheme is fairly consistent and rarely misses a beat in the meter as the story unfolds. Words such as discreet, dismayed, and profound add to the educational value but do not elevate the reading level unnecessarily or detract from the catchy jingles.
The only negative in the book for me is that Picky is a disobedient child who refuses to eat the food that his parents provide for him. Picky's parents are concerned about their child's lack of nourishment and are forced to spy on their child to determine the meaning behind his behavior. Although the reason for Picky's rebellion is revealed, a resolution to his problem is never given. If Picky doesn't eat his required four pounds of fish every day, how will he survive?
There were no noticeable errors in the text. It was edited well. In spite of my objection about unpunished, rebellious children, I am giving it 4 out of 4 stars. I think the strong message of embracing each other's differences outweighs the negatives. I recommend that this book be read by parents to their children as it will encourage dialogue about many common issues that arise between parents and their children.

Thanks for reading my review. I agree with you about being scientifically accurate even in a children's book.Sarah Sonbol wrote: ↑15 Jan 2022, 03:08 I really liked the cover illustrations. The message conveyed by the story is important but I didn't like that it didn't show that it is unacceptable to disobey parents. Although not necessary, but I prefer being scientifically accurate in children books. This way, they would gain knowledge in addition to the fun while reading the story. Nice review.

I appreciate your comments.Janelydia Mwangi wrote: ↑18 Jan 2022, 17:44 The review makes it interesting to read in addition to the colourful illustrations that is eye catching to the child's eye view. Connecting the world of fantasy to the current emerging issue of nutrition is thumbs up for me.
