Review of Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat
All of us miss our childhood days. They were the most happy and carefree years of our lives. Children undergo character development during the foundational years of life. Parental upbringing, experiences learnt, along with societal impact, help in the overall development of a child into a complete individual. This understanding helps them to grow in life and prepares them for the future. It is a good idea to inculcate the habit of reading in kids so that they may learn new things about the world and develop a mind of their own. For that, great responsibility lies on the shoulders of authors of children's books, because they need to come up with an interesting plot without compromising with the intention of providing moral ideals too. Considering these attributes, this book completely fits the bill. Serendipity Mystery: Diary of a Snoopy Cat by R.F. Kristi is a children's fiction novel. The author has made a commendable effort in knitting together an interesting children's fiction and mystery novel, revolving around an animal protagonist, Inca, a brave Siberian cat, who runs a detective agency. This book is the seventh instalment in the Diary of a Snoopy Cat series.
The book begins with a detailed introduction of the central characters, who are mainly comprised of Inca and her siblings. Inca runs a detective agency along with six members that include her siblings and her friends, ranging from cats, dogs, and even hamsters. In this instalment, the feline siblings are shown embarking on a relaxing holiday with their mother. They are on a trip to South East Asia, and the book mainly features their adventures in Sri Lanka. Initially, Inca and her siblings enjoyed their holidays to the fullest at the pristine Sri Lankan beaches with their mother. Mystery strikes when an antique sword goes missing from the local museum and police are unable to trace its whereabouts. Unintentionally, Inca finds herself being drawn to the case since she enjoys solving mysteries. This case is different from other cases because it is on alien land and will not be easily solved without gaining the trust of the locals of that area. Inca soon befriends two locals, namely Meena, the elephant, and Rani, the turtle. Together, Inca and her detective gang set out to solve the mystery. Will they be able to trace the thieves? Does a major threat await them? The answer to these questions lies in this interesting book.
There are many positive attributes to this book. Even though it is the seventh instalment, any reader who hasn’t read the previous parts won’t have a problem understanding the characters. There are detailed references to all the important characters right from the beginning. The author has written it in a very vivid manner, making it easier for children to visualise the adventure. The book also contains beautiful illustrations that portray the essence of the story perfectly and add bright colours to the story. The description of the island and its picturesque landscape makes the reading experience intriguing and enjoyable. The most important positive attribute of this book is that it inculcates good moral values in children through its story. By introducing animals as central characters, it teaches children to be loving and caring towards animals. The metaphorical representation of human relationships among the protagonists will inculcate empathy and respect in children towards their human bonds, such as towards their parents and siblings. This book also teaches us about the value of true friendship, loyalty, and bravery. It will help children imbibe it in their personalities and develop into humane individuals. By bringing different types of animals together, the author also brings forth the idea of tolerance and unity to the readers. The plot is tight and the mystery builds up decently, leading to an exciting read.
There were very few points that I disliked in this book. At some places, the choice of words was a bit difficult, considering it’s a children’s novel. Moreover, the illustrations could have been larger in number for an even better reading experience. Sometimes, the book seems to drag along. For instance, the adventures in the forest and the descriptive chapters about local sightseeing seemed too much to go with the actual plot premise.
From the technical standpoint, there were no grammatical errors in this book, leading me to conclude that it is exceptionally well edited. I would happily rate it 4 out of 4 stars due to its interesting plot that appealed even to an adult like me. I would recommend it to all children over the age of 5. Adults will love it too, either to narrate it to their kids or to reminisce about their childhood days. I will not recommend it to mature audiences who don’t enjoy illustrated children's fiction genres.
