Review of Lucky,The One-Eyed Cat
"Far, far away in the land of Istanbul, Turkey, lived lots of people and lots of cats," so begins Lucky, the One-Eyed Cat by Ava Swartz. After an attack by another cat leaves him with only one eye, Lucky doesn't feel that his name suits him. He feels unwanted until Sally adopts him. His kind new owner covers his scar with a pink patch and gives him lots of love. Sally wants to protect Lucky by keeping him indoors, but the spirited cat is determined to go on an adventure. What will he discover?
This 32-page picture book teaches children about pet adoption, gratitude, bullying, and kindness. Young readers will also learn historical facts about the cat-loving city of Istanbul, which once worshiped felines. The book features lovely illustrations by Carolina Carmo. Her pastel art beautifully portrays landmarks like Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar marketplace. Best of all, the illustrator brings Lucky to life in a whimsically delightful way. Children will enjoy funny rhymes like "A hat is not a hat unless adorned by a cat!"
Lucky is amazed that Sally calls him handsome and thinks his scar looks like he is winking at her. My favorite thing about the book is the unconditional love that it subtly conveys to children. Instead of Lucky's scar turning Sally away, it endears him to her, which is such a relevant message in a world obsessed with perfect Instagram squares and the relentless pursuit of flawless selfies.
Unfortunately, the story takes a vague turn between pages 26-28 that may confuse young readers. Adding a simple explanation about "the office nearby" would provide needed clarity regarding how Lucky becomes reunited with his owner. Also, despite an otherwise professional presentation, the book contains several errors. Young readers need to see correct spelling and punctuation modeled even in picture books.
Overall, I rate the charming children's book 3 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to young children through the age of 8. Grandparents, teachers, parents, and older siblings will enjoy reading the delightful story to the little ones in their lives.
