Review of Mister Pushkin Turns Over A New Leaf
Mister Pushkin Turns Over A New Leaf by AC Michael showcases various adventures and happenings in the life of the beloved cat, Mister Pushkin. This children’s book is a collection of short stories promoting lessons of determination, motivation, perseverance, patience, humor, and the value of consistency. Each short story looks into an event in Mister Pushkin’s life, a male kitty-cat with golden eyes and a curious shade of purplish-blue fur.
There are numerous positive aspects to this collection. I found that the physical descriptions of Mister Pushkin were well executed and his personality is beautifully captured. The accuracy in describing Mister Pushkin rings true for most cats of his breed. We have a similar breed ourselves; I so enjoyed remembering what our cat got up to over the years! The subtle insertion of humor is echanting for adults who read to or with the younger generation. The environmental descriptions felt tangible and the use of imagery was wonderfully vivid. The tone of the book carried congruently throughout each story and never wavered. The vocabulary is beautiful, yet out of place (see below).
Unfortunately, there were some negative aspects too. The vocabulary is very advanced for the recommended age group of 8-13 years. Clarification must be supplied for many of the words. Although the descriptions of Mister Pushkin are brilliantly done, those of the secondary characters are lacking in many ways. Inserting more detailed descriptions of these characters could have added more color to the stories. For a children’s book, I found that some scenes were a bit too vivid (such as decapitated mice) and other scenes contained questionable behavior (such as spraying an unfriendly woman with urine), parental guidance is advised.
I hereby rate Mister Pushkin Turns Over A New Leaf a full four out of four stars. The editing was excellent, I was unable to identify any true error. The stories, despite any cautions, were delightful to read. The subtle humor allowed me additional stimulation while reading a children’s book.
Target audiences include adults to young teens. I recommend the book to those seeking a quirky and entertaining read with inspiring life lessons. It would serve perfectly for a nightly bedtime read. I repeat that I do recommend parental advisory for some of the scenes, the choice of what level of exposure we want our children to have is our own. These scenes are not excessive nor are they unpleasantly vivid, it was just the idea of seeing them in a children’s book that caused me to insert the advisory. The vocabulary will need to be clarified for young readers.
