Berns McGoo Food Detective reminds me of Inca and her detective team, a book series by R.F. Kristi. Here, we meet two furry siblings, Berns and her brother, Gus. Both are diehard fans of food and reside in New Orleans. An event, Cinco de Mayo, is about to happen in a few days. Taco is one staple food that can’t miss on the menu. Unfortunately, a taco truck has been stolen! Who did it?

I loved that the food detectives were committed to unraveling one case at a time. This way, I fully absorbed the happenings while observing the environment for potential clues of the truck thief. Bain Manning does not interweave so many plots at once that a reader is left confused, and thus, forced to reread pages for better understanding.

I enjoyed the thrills that came with Gus and McGoo’s adventures. Plus, they both analyzed the list of suspects who loved tacos. They had to formulate a plan. While at it, they were not afraid to approach any potential suspect. Overall, Gus and McGoo struck me as wise, helpful, and fierce.

Have I mentioned how picturesque the geography of their region is? The palm trees are green and appealing, the police’s blue uniform does not require you to read the book and know who he is, and the tacos appear deeply sumptuous. Additionally, there’s a horse racing event where the real deal is (to avoid inserting spoilers).

There is nothing to dislike. The book is professionally edited because I encountered absolutely no errors. And you’re probably wondering: don’t our furry friends have owners? Oh yes, they do! Their participation comes much later in the story. I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to kids who’d love to help Gus and McGoo uncover the offender. Moreover, the publication will bewilder enthusiasts of tacos and horse racing.
