Often, we judge people based on what we see externally. What is inside us matters the most: kindness, love, a caring heart, etc. In The True Colors of Weedle by June Rachelson-Ospa, we encounter a strange-looking boy, at least that is what the people in their village thought at first.

Falafarinum is a village full of skin-glowing individuals. Everyone looks colorful! When Weedle is born, his parents notice he has no color. He was born blank! As Weedle grows up, he experiences stigmatization and is bullied. Children his age call him all manner of mean names. One day, some unusual happens. When he leaves school, Weedle finds a letter. Someone is willing to help him out of his misery. What will the boy do?

I liked how Weedle’s parents cherished their son, despite his differences. They knew their love alone would not be enough but still cared for him immensely. Even when the boy partially disappears, they mobilized search parties to look for him. Then we encounter Mr. M, whose parents abandoned him for being different, and he has no friends.

I loved Katie, a caterpillar. Her choice of words left me laughing. Also, the pictures are worth viewing. The forest looks scary walking through it alone, and the people of Falafarinum are kaleidoscopic. Some are purple, others are orange, among other colors. Mr. M is strange-looking. Well, even I would faint upon seeing him, just like Weedle did.

The book is professionally edited, as I did not find grammatical errors. After devouring the tale, kids will realize that judging others based on religion, race, or even opinion difference is not virtuous. We all deserve equality. I did not discover anything to dislike. I rate the volume 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to kids who often feel like the world is crushing on them— the “Weedles” of their regions.

Having felt like a 'weedle' growing up, this hits hard. And the words 'born blank' are such a visually intense but also simple way to conceptualize the consequences of being different. Amazing review.

Well, how do we see what's inside? I don't know if that day would even come when we abandon stereotypes and get to discover individuals for who they really are. Great review.

This is a delightful book for children. It teaches love and acceptance. Here we have Weedle who is different from others and who is so miserable because of it. But there is hope. Thank you for the review.

This book sheds light on how it is okay to be different and that message is always welcome in society.

Weedle sounds very easy for kids to relate to. Who hasn't felt uncomfortably different at one time or another?

I find this book educating. People should not be judged based on what we feel externally about them and they should be loved equally
