[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "My Skin is Lovely" by Shem Diana Moses.]
Shem Diana Moses is a creative writer who likes to write materials that help little girls of color to develop self-love and boost their confidence. Through this book, young girls with dark skin will learn why they are unique.
In My Skin is Lovely, Diana talks about the superpowers that young girls have. These superpowers are characteristics, and the author hopes to help her readers develop them, understand them, or be more comfortable having them. Examples of these superpowers include attitude, brains, culture, and so on. Each superpower has a dedicated chapter, and these chapters are arranged in alphabetical order. The book is short, with less than a hundred pages, and is full of colorful illustrations that will grab the attention of children.
I like how the author used the first-person narrative style to her advantage, and I believe this will help children with affirmations as they read. The book will also teach young girls of color to love their darker skin, regardless of what other people might think. Diana also wrote straightforwardly. She used simple words, so young readers won’t find it difficult to understand this book. I liked the illustrations in this book. The colors were vibrant, and the drawing style was unique, so they were pleasing to look at. I didn’t dislike anything about this book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because the author did a fantastic job putting this book together. The book is coherent, and the quality is very good. Also, I didn’t come across any errors, so I believe that this book received exceptional editing. This book will have a positive impact on children, so parents should grab a copy and keep an eye out for similar books.
I recommend this book to young girls of color who have learned to read and are between the ages of 5 to 13. Parents with daughters who fall into these categories can pick this book up for their children, and read it to them to help them develop confidence.
