Review of The Garden Bone
The Garden Bone has that clichéd trio formula that rarely fails in fantasy stories, and Maria Magliano pulled it off in a good way. It's a classic adventure novel filled with heroes, villains, and monsters.
12-year-old Wenceslao comes from an eccentric dinosaur-obsessed family. Still traumatized by the death of his parents, he discovers a tooth in his backyard that will lead to the discovery of an anomaly in the form of a dinosaur in his world. To fix the balance, he involves his friends. This leads them to another world — a world of dinosaurs. There, they are dragged into a political power struggle, and Wenceslao discovers the truth about his family, newfound powers, and a re-affirming of a bond among friends that only a near-death adventure can bring
The author went to great lengths in showcasing her artistic flair in this children's novel. The illustrative pictures added within the stories helped embellish the novel's plot. The author's description of the main character was accurate and realistic, especially in his thought process. Although the plot became predictable as I read on, it could have sequels and more intriguing developments. I admired the ingenuity of the alternate story world, especially considering the whole "Cycle" concept and Dinosaurs with powers. The ideas would surely make for an exciting read and a pleasant escape from the usual story world.
The delivery of the story in present tense was apt; it made it immersive. Matteo, the harbinger of humor to deadly situations, was my favourite character. The novel was quite impactful to my knowledge of dinosaurs. I picked up a few things on my reading journey.
This book was edited to utmost perfection and had a plot with more potential than was shown. There was no tangible negative thing about The Garden Bone. Therefore, I'd give it 4 out of 4 stars. I'd be looking forward to more stories from her, and I'd recommend the book to kids and teens. Also, adults would find it quite enjoyable and remember the old childlike fascination with dinosaurs.
