Fears and insecurities are characteristics of man that cannot be overlooked. Children's books like Thunder and Lightning: They're Not So Frightening by JD Schmith teach us to play the role of parents when our children are scared.

William was a little boy who loved looking out the window when it was getting late and the people of the town were going back home from their daily business. However, while watching through the window on a particular evening, the clouds started getting dark, and he knew it was about to rain. He knew that a big storm was coming and that it would be accompanied by thunder and lightning. He wasn't a fan of noise and hated thunder. Immediately it started raining; he went under his blanket and hid. When he became too frightened, he began yelling, and his father appeared and told him what would make him never be afraid of lightning and thunder again.

Everyone is born with the fear factor, but what helps us out is how we deal with these fears while growing up. The way we handle insecurity and fear as kids goes on to have an impact on our adult lives. As kids, we tend to believe what we hear rather than what we see, especially when it comes from someone we trust. This is a good book to help educate children on the phenomenon behind thunder and lightning.

There was nothing to dislike in this book. The vocabulary used by the author would help teach children how to read. The pictures in the book also helped in conveying the author's message. I could feel the father and son's strong connection between William and his father. His father's presence alone was all he needed to not be scared again, and this is what I hope I will generate with my children in the future.

I'm rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was void of errors. It was exceptionally well-edited. I would recommend it to people who love reading children's books.
