Review of My Hair is Lovely
What most people first notice about African-Americans is their beautiful and curly hair. Their natural hair is stunning, and they should always be able to wear it with pride. However, history was not kind to them, so they often had to hide their natural curls.
My Hair Is Lovely by Shem Diana Moses is a children’s book that glorifies the hair of African-Americans. The book is divided into ten chapters, and each chapter discusses different aspects, characteristics, and history of African-American natural hair. The author explains why this hair is unique, how it can be braided, and how it should be taken care of. The book also mentions noteworthy African-Americans who fought that such hair could be worn freely and without any restrictions.
First of all, I must emphasize that this book is a real little gem. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I appreciate how the author addresses the young readers of this book as supergirls. Throughout the book, Shem Diana Moses honors her origins and her natural hair and asks the reader to do the same. The book is highly educational, and the reader can learn a lot about the history of African-Americans and what they all had to do throughout history to tame or hide their natural hair. I especially like the way and the enthusiasm with which the author raises the morale of all African-American children who will be reading this book. At the end of each chapter is a symbolic illustration that depicts the essence of that chapter. I like the colors and vibrancy of those images.
As for the negative aspects, I must point out that there is nothing in the book that I do not like. In addition, I did not encounter any errors, so I can conclude that the book was exceptionally well edited.
All things considered, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. I liked every aspect of the book, and I have no reason to give it a lower rating. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn some interesting facts about Black hair and its history. This book would also be an ideal gift for all children who have hair like this because the author teaches them to be proud of it.
