Al and the Owligator by Janet Batchelor is a children's story about two unlikely friends. The alligator and the owl are forced to work together when a mishap leaves them with a partial body swap. The owl, with the alligator's body, and the alligator, with the owl's wings and legs, try to figure out how to make each other whole again.

This is a short, sweet story. It is full of pleasant rhymes and vibrant, colorful pictures. It displays the concept of friendship and getting along with others who are different from you in a way that is easy for children to understand and for adults to appreciate. The two delightful characters make a fabulous and funny team.

I don't have many negative things to say about this book. It did feel a little quick, and I think it would have benefitted from a bit more plot development. However, I understand that it is written for children and is just something that they can sit down and read day after day. It also seems as if this story leads the way for future stories about the owl and alligator.

I give this book 4 out of 4 stars. The rhymes flowed well and did not seem forced or cheesy. The story delivered a good message in a way that children will be able to understand. I only found one minor capitalization error in the whole book.

I would recommend this book to young children, probably under the age of six. This would be a good book for parents to read with their kids before bed. I think the theme can be enjoyed by adults as well. The colorful illustrations are also enough alone to intrigue even the youngest of readers. I could easily see this book as the start of a favorite collection in a young reader's library.
