[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "3 Kids and Self Esteem" by Erwin Fowler.]
3 Kids and Self Esteem tells the story of three children named Michael, Lisa, and Sid. They are upset because they get bullied at school for being different. Michael is bald, Lisa has glasses, and Sid has braces. One day, while the children were feeling sad in their rooms, a bright light shone from each of their closets. While this was happening, a voice asked them to come into the light. Who was waiting for the children on the other side? What lessons will they learn during their adventure?
Erwin Fowler did an excellent job of creating diverse characters in this book. I found this element pleasing because the author showed that confidence issues could affect anyone, no matter who they are. Inclusivity also worked well because the children worked through their dilemmas without regard for their differences. I have no doubts that young readers will see how working as a team is beneficial for problem-solving.
In one section of the book, the main characters had a meal together. While reading this part, I noticed there were no unhealthy foods present. There is a direct correlation between eating healthy and living a high-quality life, which is something Erwin understands. Her subtle inclusion of this message is unique because I have not read many children’s books that include this lesson. I must commend the author for showing readers that solving your problems by eating unhealthy foods is not a good solution.
Honestly, there was nothing I disliked about this book. The lessons scattered throughout it will please both parents and children. Although there were not as many illustrations as I expected, they are colorful and expressive. I am also thrilled to say there were no grammatical errors in the book, making it exceptionally well edited.
3 Kids and Self Esteem gets all 4 out of 4 stars from me. I highly recommend this book to children between the ages of five and nine because once they start school, they will have to learn how to deal with other kids possibly picking on them. Because some of the words may be too hard for young readers to pronounce, parents should read this book with their kids.
