Standing firm for one's beliefs against the crowd can test one's courage and resilience. It is often easier to back down and give up one's dreams. However, there's often much gain in perseverance. Animal Village by Nelda LaTeef relates an old story about the perseverance of a tortoise.

The village of Zindair was in a dilemma. The sky had refused to give rain. Therefore, drought had descended on the entire populace. Chief Zamboha assembled the animals to find a solution to the pressing problem. The tortoise had an idea. However, it required much work and endurance. At first, everyone went along with her plan. After a while, though, things took a different turn.

I love the underlying moral of this story. Often, both adults and children face situations where they have to stand against the crowd. The tortoise's strength of character and endurance is a sterling example of how determined we should be in achieving our goals. Also, the story is presented in a very simple way. This would make it easy for children to learn from the story.

My favorite part of the book is the beautiful and colorful pictures of the animals. It is amazing that the author was also the illustrator of the book. The illustrations made the book classic and interesting. Children would find them really attractive.

Another noteworthy quality of the protagonist is his forgiving and generous attitude. Children can learn that instead of paying others back in their own coins, it is often more desirable to let go and forgive the wrongs done by others.

I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. It was exceptionally well edited. I have no dislikes about it. The resilient and determined attitude of the tortoise and the outcome of her diligence can serve as a teaching aid to help kids cultivate good values. While adults can also benefit from this story, it will be particularly helpful to children between the ages of 4 and 9 years.
