Farmer Beau’s Farm by Kathleen Geiger is a delightful tale of acceptance and love. Farmer Beau and his wife noticed six kittens playing on their farm one day. They bring them food and water and watch them play. Eventually, the kittens leave the farm one by one. Only one kitten remained, and the farmer and his wife named her Kailey and invited her to stay. Kailey agreed to stay, so the farmer builds her a little house to live in. Kailey soon makes a new friend named Samantha. Kailey Kitten and Samantha Bunny are enjoying life on the farm when they hear the farmer and his wife talking about a new mysterious animal that will be moving in. Kailey and Samantha are worried that the new animal might take the attention away from them and might not fit in. What is this mystery animal? Will Kailey and Samantha welcome the new arrival, or will they be unkind?

I enjoyed this book. This was a very cute story with adorable illustrations. The author did a good job of letting the animals voice their valid concerns about a new animal joining the family. I like that the animals instantly feel bad for picking on the new arrival and instead try to make her feel welcome. I enjoyed the bright and bold illustrations. Kids will enjoy these colorful images. I also like that the author chose an animal that you would not normally see on a farm. This is a good representation of children that feel like they don’t fit in.

The only thing that I did not like about this book is that the animals never voice any of their concerns to the farmer or his wife. I feel it is important to help children realize that their caregivers are there to listen to their worries and help them through them. Overall, this is a sweet story about friendship and acceptance.

I give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I saw only a couple of minor editing errors that did not distract from the story. I enjoyed the message of accepting others and being kind to everyone.

I recommend this book to parents, foster parents, families that are expecting a new sibling, teachers, and children that love animals and farms. This book teaches a valuable lesson: be kind to others no matter their differences.
