[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Pud- The WANNABE Cat" by Brian Murphy.]
Pud is a cat that lives with his family. The members of his family include Sue, Ben, and their son, Theo. Pud wants to be a great swimmer, he wants to be braver, he wants to be smarter, and he wants to be more than just a house cat. One day, he wakes up on a truck and discovers that he has no idea where he is. He had taken a nap on the truck when the gardener came to mow the grass at their home. What would he do now? Would he be able to find his way back home? Will Pud become more than just a house cat? Find answers in Pud- The WANNABE Cat by Brian Murphy.
I enjoyed this publication for some reasons. First, the first-person narrative style the author adopted made me see things from Pud’s perspective in a way that gave me insights into the way some cats perceive certain things. Another thing I like about this book is the colorful and distinctive illustrations that are provided throughout the pages. Those pictures make it easy to follow the story, and they also help capture the attention of children and keep them glued until the end. Readers would also learn about the event that inspired the author to pen down this tale; this story is provided at the end of the book.
Additionally, I like how the writer often described sounds. For example, on one occasion, Murphy wrote that Pud heard the sound “squawk,” after which he saw an enormous eagle approach him. Because of the way the author writes those sounds, kids can learn about some of the sounds different animals make.
Despite the positives, I feel like the story is incomplete. The author introduced a bird at the beginning of the tale as Pud's greatest enemy and showed a couple of instances where the bird troubled Pud. However, nothing was written about what became of the bird.
Nonetheless, this is a good book, and I enjoyed reading it. Moreover, the text is exceptionally edited. I didn’t notice any errors. I rate this piece 3 out of 4 stars. The one point I deducted is a result of the negative point I explained in the previous paragraph. This publication deserves no less than three stars because the positive points outweigh the negative aspects. I suggest this publication to children between four and eight. Lovers of cat stories would enjoy this read.
