Kathy Kovar’s Shadow’s Adventure Home is a delightful children’s picture book that will enchant kids with the adventures of Shadow the cat. When we’re introduced to Shadow, his family is packing boxes to move to a new home in the country. This move promises to be a good one for this curious cat. He loves watching birds through the window, and the new home has plenty of windows. There’s only one problem. After the family completes the move, Shadow seizes the opportunity to chase a bird when the family mistakenly leaves a door open. The bird chase is a fun adventure until Shadow becomes hopelessly lost. The narrative centers around Shadow trying to find his way back home to his family.

I really enjoyed Shadow’s Adventure Home, and I found it to be a charming story that will appeal to young children. A lost cat is something every child can relate to, and children will empathize with Shadow’s fear and longing for his family. This book is based on a true story of the author’s cat who went missing after a move. I liked how Kovar included a photo of her cat at the start of the book, and I appreciated that she included a dedication to lost cats everywhere. As I am also a cat lover, I thought this was a nice gesture.

I didn’t find any real flaws with the story, and I felt it was a successful debut book for the author. The illustrations nicely captured Shadow’s emotions, especially his fascination with birds and his bewilderment when he became lost. A favorite illustration of mine depicted Shadow hiding under the chair in his new house. It reminded me of how sneaky cats can be when it comes to finding good hiding places! Overall, both the story and illustrations worked well together.

Shadow’s Adventure Home is a short but enjoyable book. It’s also exceptionally well-edited, with no errors. For the reasons mentioned above, I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend the book for young children under the age of 7. Young kids will appreciate the illustrations and the simple, timeless story. Adults who love cats will also have fun reading this book to children.
