Review of Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula by R.F. Kristi is the eighth book in the "Diary of a Snoopy Cat" series. Again, Kristi introduces the characters first, enabling the reader to grow with them as the story progresses. In my experience, many children's books purposely aim to entertain kids. In this book, however, many thematic representations are explored. You can attribute most of these themes to human nature and assume them as building blocks and standard life-setters.
In Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula, Inca and her friends follow her human caregiver, Missy, to South Korea. Missy was selected to judge in a French patisserie competition. During an incident involving lost cheese, the tension mounts indefinitely. Who could have taken the cheese? Inca and her friends go on an adventure to North Korea to explore the region and meet new friends. They also try to devise a plan to ease Ye-Jun from his situation. Even with the help of a gang, will they reunite Ye-Jun with his family? In their exploration, they learned about the prominent features of the Korean Peninsula.
Kristi's message is about positivity. The themes she discusses in the book on friendships, determination, adventure, teamwork, and creativity, among many others, reflect a positive image to children. I loved the suspense the author builds around the cheese scene. Kristi employs sarcasm and satire throughout the book, especially in the characters' conversations. The team's navigation of the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) motivated me. Inca must have been a brave cat. The artwork on the cover page and the bright, captivating colors are appealing. Images helped cement the plot of the book. The author detailed the Korean region with convincing mastery to the point that I believed its pictorial build-up in the book.
I didn't find anything negative to take away from this masterpiece. Instead, I attribute Kristi's writing style to my love for this book. I got super invested in learning Korea's history and cultural lessons at some point. In addition, I didn't encounter any errors in the book. Therefore, I would conclude that the book was exceptionally well-edited. Furthermore, despite it being a sequel, the characters are well developed. Consequently, one can argue that this book could stand out alone.
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula deserves a perfect rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Due to its educative nature, any parent gifting their children this book will be adding so much value to them. I would recommend this book to cartoon and anime lovers too.
