Donny and Mary Grace got some really bad news. Their father was a priest and was called upon to serve in Africa. Donny and Mary Grace would have to live with their grandparents in California. Donny was ecstatic about the move, but his sister was sad. She didn't want to pack up and leave all her friends. However, her parents convinced her that they would only be in Africa for two years and promised they would talk every day. Things were going fine when they just moved to California until Mary Grace started getting bullied. Will she find out who the mystery bully is?

Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure by Catherine A. Pepe was an interesting read. It covered themes of love, friendship, and bullying. Mary Grace loved solving mysteries, and she gets to solve one that involved her and her brother. I like the lessons that kids can learn from this story. One such lesson is that it is important to care for our friends and family members who have developmental disabilities. Mary Grace was always looking out for Donny, who had Down's syndrome.

I did not find anything to dislike about this book. While this is a children's book, it did not contain any illustrations. The author made up for this with highly imaginative scenes. I liked the scenes at the zoo when Donny got lost. I could imagine everyone running around trying to find him. The writing style was simple and easy to understand.

I will give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because it was professionally edited and I couldn't find any flaws. I liked how the bully was dealt with in the end.

The vocabulary of this book would be most suitable for older children. I would recommend it to children ages eight and upwards. Also, this is a good book for grandparents to read to their grandchildren. They could explain what bullying is and how not to become a bully.
