Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure
Children are filled with curiosity; it is what makes them so wonderful. In similar ways, we started as children and enjoyed our time in the zoo, parks, and churches. At the time, everything felt like a wonderland full of things to learn. Eventually, however, we all reach a point when we have to be temporarily left behind. It makes or breaks our childhood journeys. Everything happens in Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventure by Catherine A. Pepe. We are kids once more.
This book starts with a child-friendly atmosphere that features the ten-year-old Mary Grace Miller and her brother, Donny. Their family visits the zoo together to see the animals and experience familiar child-like fantasies. For example, Donny falls asleep on a zoo tram that looks like a train, and they see the penguins that he loves so much. Everyone has gotten lost as a child out of their love of something, and this book will not let you forget about it. The fun always ends, however. The children are sent to their grandparents because of their parents’ missionary work. As a result, the children interact with more of their peers.
I would easily recommend this book to children of nine years and above. At this point in their lives, they would have already met several types of children in school and have witnessed interactions such as bullying. I also assume they would have already experienced gentle disciplinary actions. As there is bullying involved, however, I would advise kids to read this book with the guidance of an adult. This ensures that the children reading can fully understand the lessons integrated into the book.
There is nothing I disliked about Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventure. I believe that this is how a children’s book should be written. Reading about their adventures took me back in time, and I loved to read about how their family bonded. It also effortlessly threads moral lessons into the storyline and is easy to read. On top of all of this, this book was also professionally edited. I rate this book four out of four stars.
Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventure hit all the right spots. I especially loved the friendly reminder in the book that we could be anything we want to be. As children, these are the ages at which they are most ambitious. These passions must be cherished and nurtured. Catherine did a great job of showing this lesson (and more) and demonstrating the importance of children's interactions. I highly applaud her for this book.
