Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure by Catherine A. Pepe is a children's book about kindness and students' differences. It illustrates the adventure and strong relationship of a sister and a brother. Also, it presents various themes such as family life, friendship, and bullying.

Briefly, the story focuses on Mary Grace Miller, a ten-year-old girl who can solve any mystery, and her five-year-old brother Donny with Down syndrome. The quiet life of the two children in Wichita changes when their parents have to go on a special mission in Kenya for two years. Thus, Donny and Mary Grace must start an adventure in California and live with their grandparents.

I liked that Catherine A. Pepe illustrated family and school life so that the readers could learn from the experiences of the two protagonists. I loved Mary Grace's personality and empathy. For instance, I empathized with her sadness when she found out that she had to leave her home and was impressed by her maturity when she understood that her parents' intervention in Africa could make a difference in people's lives there. Also, I appreciated that she adopted a positive attitude for Donny's sake regardless of the situation. She cared for him and worried about his special classes at the new school in California.

There is nothing I disliked about this book. I liked that the author illustrated what life is like for a child with Down syndrome. I liked Mrs. Hagen's idea of Donny's friend of the week. I found her approach very useful and suitable for a child with special needs and appreciated the teacher and classmates' kindness. Also, I enjoyed reading about Mary's grandma and her friends' gang solving mysteries and finding out the two candy burglars of a store.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I truly enjoyed the character development and writing style. I loved how Mary Grace handled all her problems. I liked that this story taught the reader a valuable lesson: how to manage a difficult situation and understand the consequences of misbehavior. Also, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure was exceptionally well edited since I discovered no single error while reading it.

I recommend this book to all children who like adventure, mystery, and humor. It is perfect for those who want to read a story about family life, especially those who experience difficulties at a new school or find it harder to adapt to a new lifestyle. Also, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure is suitable for a large audience because anyone can learn a great lesson of respect and kindness by reading the story of Mary Grace and Donny.
