Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure
Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is a mystery children’s book that is bound to entertain young minds and teach them about love and forgiveness.
The story is based on the adventures of 10-year-old Mary Grace and her 5-year-old brother, Donny, who has special needs. They live in Wichita with their parents, Mr and Mrs Miller. Mr Miller is a priest and rector of St James Episcopal Church, while Mrs Milller is a civil engineer who designs water systems for the city. Mary is very proud of her parents, especially her mother’s job, and she often brags about it to her friends in school. She’s also extremely fond of her brother, Donny, and very protective of him.
Life seemed very happy for Mary until her parents announced one day that they are going on a mission for two years, and she and Donny would have to go live in California with her grandparents. Understandably, Mary was distraught and wished she could stay in Wichita. What she didn’t know then is that California would be the beginning of a brand new adventure for her and Donny and even grant her access to an exclusive mystery club.
The book is a light read, and I finished it in one go. The author’s narrative writing style is perfect for a children’s book and captures the attention of its readers from the very start. The language is clear and simple, and the moral lessons are straightforward for young minds to understand. I love how Mary Grace takes care of her brother and is patient with him. It conveys a strong message to children about the importance of empathy and kindness towards others with disabilities.
I also like the message on how to deal with bullying and temper justice with mercy. Punishment is good to deter wicked acts from being repeated, but sometimes the root cause of the problem should be studied and, if possible, rectified with love and understanding.
The only issue I had with the book is that it does not have illustrations which would have made it more appealing to children. Young minds can get easily bored or distracted with just words, but colourful pictures will keep them captivated and focused on the story.
Overall, I would still rate it 4 out of 4 stars. It is a lovely and entertaining book with many moral lessons for young minds. I didn’t spot a single error, so I must say it is exceptionally well edited. I would recommend it to children from 5-10 years old.
