Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure, by Catherine A. Pepe, follows Mary Grace and her family. Mary Grace, a fifth grader, had a younger brother called Donny, who had down syndrome. Donny was a happy and positive kid, and his family members were glad to have him. Mr. Miller, their father, was a priest assigned to a parish in Wichita.

One day, Mr. and Mrs. Miller announced to their kids that their bishop wanted them to be missionaries for the Episcopal Church in Africa. They would be going to live in a small village in Kenya. Hence, Mary Grace and Donny would be going to live with their grandparents in California. Though Donny was excited about going to be with his grandparents, Mary Grace was upset about the situation but changed her mind after her mother convinced her. At school and in California, Mary Grace received bullying and threat notes. Who was behind them, and why were they sending them?

The book is intriguing and suspenseful, containing some mysteries. I love the story about the "Grandma Gang," which unveils how they solved the mystery of the "persnickety burglars." Besides, the book shows how Mary Grace got challenged and revealed those behind the unpleasant notes. Furthermore, the plot is solid, unveiling interesting events concerning Mary Grace and her brother within and outside their school.

Regarding the characters, they are appealing. Mr. and Mrs. Miller are great parents. Mary Grace is a strong and intelligent kid, Donny is a unique and likable kid, and their grandparents are very intriguing, always involved in awesome activities.

There's nothing I don't like about this children's book . It shows how to treat people that have disabilities with equality. Moreover, 10 percent of the proceeds of the sales of it will be donated to Olympics. It also shows some facts about down syndrome and encourages readers to treat people that have it with love and kindness. However, though it's a good read, sensitive parents and kids with unpleasant experiences relating to disabilities may not like it.

Finally, I rate Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure 4 out of 4 stars. I couldn't rate it lower because it was well narrated and entertaining. In addition, exploring the themes of bullying and blackmail, it highlights the consequences of wrong actions. Besides, it was exceptionally well edited; I didn't see any grammar errors or typos. It'll be an interesting read for elementary school kids, who are experiencing bullying or threats at school.
