Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure
Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure by Catherine A. Pepe is a book filled with adventures and lessons. Mr. and Mrs. Miller had two lovely children they dedicated their love and time to. Donny, one of their children, had Down syndrome and Mary Grace, his older sister, was a smart kid who loved solving mysteries and caring for her little brother. Things were going smoothly until a big announcement came which affected the family, altered their plans and caused the kids to move to California to live with their grandparents. On moving to California, they had to adapt to the new environment and enrol in a new school. A series of events occurred in their new school and then a mystery needed to be solved. What was the mystery? How was it solved? How were their lives impacted by the change of environment?
There are many positive things about this book. I commend the author for using this story to educate its readers about bullying, its forms and effects. I also appreciate the enlightenment about Down syndrome and how to act to individuals that have it. The book contains some amount of humor, which I loved. The characters were well-developed; it made it easier to understand and follow the story.
This book is beyond children's book to me. It contains some lessons I found valuable. One of the best lessons I learned from the book was showing love to family members and even others around. Another lesson I learned was finding happiness irrespective of the surrounding circumstances.
However, I found nothing to dislike about the book. It was so interesting and impactful. The book was well written. Events in the book were described and narrated skillfully.
I would rate this book four out of four stars. Every page of it was worth reading. It doesn't contain too many pages, and its words were easy to read and understand. The book was exceptionally edited as I found no error while reading it.
I would recommend this book to teachers and parents. This is because it will help to give more insight on how to handle matters involving children and how to resolve them amicably. I'll also recommend it to younger readers; it will help them to understand that their actions have effects on others and also teach them a great lesson on the impacts of bullying on their mates. Fiction lovers will find this book a good read. Adventure lovers will also enjoy this book.
