Review of Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula
One of the books in the Inca Cat Detective Series is Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula by R.F. Kristi. The story is about the escapades of seven detective cats(Inca, Fromage, Cara, Monk, Charlotte, Terrance, and Polo). Because these cats helped to solve some detective mysteries, they became popular in England and France. The mother of the cats, who also owns a cheese business, was invited by Le Cordon Bleu to South Korea for an exhibition to showcase her unique French cheese and to be a judge in a cooking competition. On their way to South Korea, they ran into Enzo, who happens to be Mom's competitor in the cheese business and one of the selected judges. Fromage (one of the cats) started feeling uneasy at the sight of Enzo onboard the same flight as the family. Fromage predicted the attitude of Enzo, who later tried to jeopardize their trip to Korea by stealing their cheese bag.
On arrival at the South Korean airport, the cats met with Ye-Jun, who would serve as their translator and tour guide because he speaks Korean and English fluently. Ye-Jun volunteered to have them stay in his house since it is better than staying in a tiny hotel room. On getting to Ye-Jun's house, one of the cats, Terrance, fell in love with his dog, Baram. The visit of the cats to South Korea turned into an expedition. They volunteered to help Ye-Jun find his missing sister and the dog that traveled to North Korea and has never returned because they were not allowed to pass through the border fence back to South Korea. Will the cat family succeed in their quest to cross the dangerous border fence between North and South Korea to bring Ji and Bo-Mi to South Korea to reunite with their family? One will have to read this book to the end to find out.
The patisserie is a peace-building competition held at the demilitarized zone(created by the UN in 1953 as a border fence that demarcates North Korea and South Korea). This competition aims to promote peace between North and South Korea. The cats decided to plan the rescue mission around the cooking competition.
I love the author's writing style and the way she supported her story with eye-catching illustrations in the different chapters to help the reader have a mental picture of the scenarios. In addition, I learned a little bit of the Korean language while reading this book. The editors did great work with the editing. I found minor, negligible errors in the book. Due to the small page size of the book and the intriguing storyline, I did not put the book down until I finished it. There is nothing in the book that I dislike. Considering the above, I am giving this book a rating of four out of four stars.
Finally, I recommend this book to kids between the ages of two and ten because the book will serve as a storybook to read at night before bedtime. Illustrators will also find this book interesting because it is rich in illustrations. I do not recommend this book to adults looking for self-help or financial literacy books. They will not find this one interesting.
