Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure
Mary Grace Miller is a young girl living in Kansas. She enjoys going to the zoo with her family, which consists of her brother, Donny, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miller. They go on visits to the zoo together to see the animals there. They love seeing and playing with the animals, especially the penguins. The children were enjoying the time they spent with their parents until their parents announced that they were sent to do missionary work in Kenya, which is a country in Africa. Mrs. Miller was a civil engineer, so she would be creating water systems for the locals while Mr. Miller was a priest. Their parents would be away for 2 years, so that meant Mary Grace and Donny would have to go to California to stay with their grandparents while their parents would be away. Mary was not happy about it, and she protested the move. She did not know that it was the start of a new adventure. Mary went to a new school, and she made new friends. She and her brother soon became victims of bullying at school. Find out what happens next for the two children in Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure, by Catherine A. Pepe.
I loved reading about the adventures of Mary Grace and Donny in California. Their grandparents had a cheerful dog named Krug, whom the children loved very much. The children were treated with so much love and care by their grandparents. Their grandmother had a group of friends that called themselves the "Grandma Gang." The women were good at solving mysteries, and Mary was intrigued by what they did. I loved Mary's attitude at school and how she took care of her brother, who had Down's syndrome. His well-being was her priority. It was an interesting story, and the characters were fun to read about.
I wanted to know more about the experiences of Mary's parents in Africa. However, the author did not go into much detail about it. There was nothing I disliked apart from that.
There were some valuable lessons in this book for children. For example, it showed how bad it was to bully other children, especially those who have special needs. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was fun to read and easy to understand. It deserves a perfect rating because it was exceptionally edited and there was very little to complain about.
I recommend this book to children aged 7 and above. Especially those who are interested in solving mystery cases.
