Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure
Catherine Anna Pepe's Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure is a children's mystery book. Mary Grace Miller is a ten-year-old girl who lives with her parents and her five-year-old Down syndrome brother, Donny. The family has a joyful, beautiful, and healthy life. They especially enjoy going to the Sedgwick County Zoo. All of this changes when the church sends their parents on a two-year missionary journey to Kenya, Africa. Mary Grace and Donny must relocate to California to live with their grandparents because their parents are unable to take them to Africa. Mary Grace dislikes the idea of moving and expresses this to her parents. Despite this, Mary Grace and Donny eventually relocate to California to live with their grandparents. With a change of residence came new difficulties and adventures that Mary Grace had never encountered before.
One aspect of this book that I like is how it portrays people with disabilities. Donny is a Down syndrome character in the book. The author's sibling inspired the character. In the book, the author effectively captures Donny's impact on the people he met with. Donny is described as a happy boy who spreads joy to everyone around him. This image of Donny resonates strongly with readers and has the potential to shift attitudes and reduce the stigma associated with people with disabilities.
Another aspect of the book that I found fascinating was the author's characterization. The book contains a wide range of characters, and the author portrays their strengths and shortcomings in an understandable manner. The protagonist of the novel, Mary Grace, is an example of a well-developed character in the book. Mary Grace is portrayed by the author as someone who is smart, witty, amusing, protective, and enjoys solving mysteries. We can also witness the narrative through the eyes of a ten-year-old and watch how they deal with challenges.
The only thing I didn't like about the book was its slow start. Because this was a mystery novel, I expected to be taken on an adventure from beginning to end. This, however, was not the case. The author spent far too much time depicting the Millers as a wonderful family. The novel is nearly finished by the time the mystery to be solved is disclosed. The mystery, in my opinion, should have been revealed sooner. This would allow the author to express herself creatively while solving the mystery.
I enjoyed reading this book and learned a few things as well. The book expertly addressed themes such as bullying and parenthood. I also learned a few things about individuals with disabilities from the book. The language employed in the book is simple to understand, making it suitable for readers of all ages. The book is also exceptionally well-edited. Given how fantastic this book is, I believe it deserves a 4 out of 4 stars rating. I recommend this book to youngsters over the age of eight since it is full of adventure and teachings appropriate for children.
