Review of Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is the eighth book in the Inca Cat Detective series by R.F. Kristi. I believe each book in the series can be read as a standalone, and I have mentioned this in previous reviews of the other books. There is a family tree at the beginning with all the main characters. The book does bring up a few previous events but nothing that would confuse a reader.
The new adventure takes place in Korea. Inca's mom is invited to present her famous cheese and be a judge in a cooking competition. Little does she know about the problems that will take place. At first, the cheese goes missing as soon as they reach the country. Then, they find out that a pair of siblings have been separated. Inca and his friends must do what they always do. They must find the culprit, protect their mom, reunite the siblings, and save the day. However, will they be able to get out in one piece?
The book is a bit longer than the others in the series but can be finished in one sitting. I like how the book addressed the issue in North Korea and South Korea, and how families can be separated. I believe it is an essential topic for awareness since many children aren't aware of what is happening in the world. The illustrations are beautiful, colourful, and nothing too extravagant.
I wish the book had a glossary for difficult words. Some younger readers might need help with unfamiliar terms such as 'distraught'.
The book seems to be exceptionally edited, as I did not find any errors or typos. Due to the reasons stated above, I give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
Children would enjoy reading Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula, especially those who have read the previous books. I believe children as young as 8 will enjoy it. Additionally, this book will be enjoyed in a classroom or library, and it will be ideal to be read aloud.
