Review of Detectives Lucy"The Nose" and Ricky "The Ears"
Who could resist such adorable pups? In Detectives Lucy “The Nose” and Ricky “The Ears” by Cathy March, the canines in question are actually amateur sleuths who are always ready to lend a helping hand (or paw) to those in need. When their friend’s bone goes missing, Lucy and Ricky use their remarkable senses to track down the lost treat, but will they make it home before their owners start worrying about them?
The cover features a drawing of two fluffy little dogs standing on a patch of grass. The title is printed in a bold font. I would have preferred more of a color variation in the artwork because, apart from the green grass, the image is otherwise black and white. The book is filled with many other illustrations that resemble comic book panels. This is a short picture book geared toward young children, so the text is simple and concise. The main themes of the story include action, adventure, and the promotion of benevolence. There is no inappropriate content, and I did not find any errors.
With characters inspired by the author’s pets, the message in this story is crystal clear: Use your skills and talents to help others in need. Lucy and Ricky do just that as they use their noses and ears to assist their friend, Benny the poodle, when he is upset. The dogs are also mindful of their owners’ feelings because they know they shouldn’t leave their home for too long. I like the fact that this book teaches children about compassion and responsibility, and the colorful artwork by Paul Schultz is sure to grab their attention.
I can honestly say that there is nothing I disliked about this lovely storybook. The only suggestion I would make is for the author to incorporate some practical information in the text. For example, kids at this reading level should also be learning about numbers, colors, and shapes. So, Ms. March could have included some scenes where these subjects are presented, such as describing that there were three dogs in total or that the bone was white in color.
As is, this is a perfect book for toddlers to enjoy as their parents or guardians help them read it. So, I am pleased to award Detectives Lucy “The Nose” and Ricky “The Ears” by Cathy March a rating of four out of four stars. Animal lovers will also appreciate this story. I hope to see more of Lucy and Ricky’s adventures in the future.
