The word family has a different meaning to different people; however, the significance of a family is usually the same. Most of the time, we can always count on our family members to have our back and love us unconditionally. In Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure, the author—Catherine A. Pepe, tells the story of Mary and her sibling Donny and how their family provided them with a great support system.

Mary Grace, a ten-year-old girl, had a brother—Donny, who had down syndrome. They lived in Kansas with their parents; a family united with love and bliss. However, things changed when the Episcopal Church sent their parents for missionary work in Kenya. Mary and Donny are forced to move to California to live with their grandparents. They were not pleased by these new changes. While in her new school in California, Mary finds herself in the middle of a mystery. What mystery is this? Does she solve it? How do these two siblings find their time in California? Read the book and find out.

I loved how the author balanced the pacing; it was neither fast nor slow. There was a trade-off between fast and slow pacing which provided variety and made the story more interesting. There were points where the author allowed me, as a reader, to stop and take a breather. In some parts, she gave a vivid description of the surroundings. she described the sounds, the movements, and everything happening in the background before bringing us back to what was happening with the characters. In other parts, she cruised right through with the story.

The other thing that is quite commendable about this book is the characters. The author gave goals to the characters. She also created conflicts by throwing obstacles in their way and allowing me, as a reader, to stay hooked and follow through as they tried to maneuver around these obstacles. For example, Mary grace had some problems in school; Someone left a note on her desk that said some mean things about her and her brother Donny. Mary Ann had to decide how to deal with that situation. The author did not just describe the characters' actions; she also gave details about their feelings and thought processes. What can I say? The Characters were well-developed, and they felt like real people.

There is nothing I disliked about this book. It is a very educative book for children. The author did an exceptional job with the editing; I encountered no grammatical errors while reading it. With that in mind, I have no reason for deducting any stars from my ratings; I give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to young readers.
