Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure
Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure by Catherine Anna Pepe highlighted a Grandma Gang Mystery. There were two main characters: Mary Grace Miller (10-year-old) and Donny Miller (5-year-old). Mary Grace is an extrovert and a very smart girl, while Donny Miller is an amazing Down Syndrome boy. Mr Miller is a full-time priest, while Mrs Miller is a civil engineer that loves to design water systems. The wonderful family lived in Wichita, Kansas.
One day, Mr and Mrs Miller were appointed to serve in Kenya, Africa, for two years. The sudden decision makes Mary Grace sad. She and his brother must live in California with their grandparents, Papa Steve and Grandma Cathy. Mary Grace hates to leave for California and needs to be happy for the sake of Donny. Meanwhile, Donny was super excited to meet his grandparents. When they lived there, the kids shared many things with their grandparents. Grandma Cathy shared with Mary Grace how she became a part of the Grandma Gang, which had solved various mysteries. Mary Grace became very excited and got to know more about California. Things run peacefully until Mary Grace and Donny receive a threat letter from someone at school warning them to go back where they belong. She felt sad, but then the Grandma Gang came to the rescue. They worked together and dug more into the person who sent the letter. Could Mary Grace fit in in her new life in California? Could she be a good sister for Donny and protect him at all costs?
Things I liked about the story are that this book is very heartwarming. The message is clear, which is about Down Syndrome. Catherine Anna Pepe brings down the Down Syndrome kids in a very positive way. Represents the name of Donny as the writer's brother who got Down Syndrome is a thoughtful thing. Donny's character, an extremely positive, cheerful and active person, had turned this book alive. I was very happy whenever I read about Donny. Especially when he gave a huge hug when he received marbles from people. Other than that, this book has a very good storyline. No part was very slow or too fast. The writer knows how to catch the reader's mood with her language style. Some pictures did add to my excitement.
The most important things and messages from this book are about how we, as normal people, should treat a person with Down Syndrome. It gives me a new perspective on them. I love to jot them down here. For example, Donny's family always exposed him to outdoor activities such as visiting the zoo and picnicking at the park. Mary Grace also took good care of Donny, such as reading Donny's favourite book at night, dancing with Donny like penguins, and playing with him all the time. That is probably the answer to why Donny grew up as a well behave and cheerful young boy.
Luckily, there is nothing I did not like about this book. Every part of the book meets my expectation.
Based on the reasons above, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I enjoyed reading this book very much. I only found one error throughout my reading, which did not bother my rating. Hence, I assumed this book was professionally edited. I do believe this book is a nice and perfect book for those who get a person who has Down Syndrome around them as it contains many moral values.
