My Dad's Pumpkin is a children's book by Susannah Nilsen. "My Dad is autistic. It's his special superpower." Dad loves building, inventing, and gardening. He also loves pumpkins. He has genetically engineered pumpkins in various colours, patterns, and textures. He also adds motors to things he has invented from his pumpkins. One day, Dad creates a pumpkin with stretchy skin. He promises it will be the biggest pumpkin in the world. He starts to inflate it with an air pump. How will this experiment end?

This book begins with a powerful Dr. Seuss quote: "Why fit in when you were born to stand out?" Nilsen also lists down the 93 words from My Dad's Pumpkin that are in the first 200 high-frequency sight words. These 200 words represent around 66% of all the words used in reading and writing. A child's reading fluency is linked directly to recognising these words. This highlights the book's educational value.

My Dad's Pumpkin introduces a few personality traits and habits of autistic people. It includes some scientific theories and practices in an educational manner. It also features adversity and disappointment when things don't go to plan. Learning how people deal with adversity is important for a child's social development and resilience.

The book's illustrations are excellent. Bright, cartoonish characters contrast with pumpkins that look like watercolour paintings. The cartoonish pictures add humour to the narrative. Some illustrations occupy their own pages. Others are interlaced with short sections of text. Others are overlaid with prose. This clever mix of text and visual art will definitely keep children interested.

I only found three minor typographical errors in this book. I couldn't find anything else to dislike about it. I therefore rate My Dad's Pumpkin 4 out of 4 stars. It is a colourful and engaging story for kids up to 10 years old. I believe parents will enjoy it, too.

I always study the issue of autism. I think it's an important subject of our day. Great review.
