Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine Anna Pepe is a book about bullying, solving mysteries and learning how to persevere. The Miller family lives in Wichita, Kansas. 10 year old Mary Grace and her 5 year old brother, Donny, are two peas in a pod. Donny has Down Syndrome and his big sister is his biggest fan and protector. Summer has come to an end and school has started. The family gets some news that Mary Grace does not take well. This news sets in motion Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures. New surroundings bring new challenges. Mary Grace is wise beyond her years and Donny is lucky to have her for a big sister. Mary Grace would no doubt say she is the lucky one.

This book is fantastic. I am really glad that I decided to read it. There is so much realism in this book. Bullying is a huge problem in schools all across this country. Kids do not realize the lasting impact bullying can have on someone. Mary Grace is brave in her actions and she is compassionate in her convictions. I enjoyed reading this book very much, especially the second half. This book is a great teaching tool for doing the right thing. Catherine was able to take a difficult subject, bullying, and turn it into a great learning opportunity.

I personally found nothing negative about this book at all. Catherine did a wonderful job introducing the storyline and all of the characters. She did not leave any of her topics unfinished.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book was exceptionally well edited. You distinctly knew when the setting changed and did not get lost or confused about what was happening. The spelling, grammar and punctuation were all on target.

This book is a childrens book. However, I feel any audience would benefit from reading this book. This is a book that can touch the hearts and minds of all.
