There is a mysterious creature that roams through the misty woods of Canada’s western coast. For many years, it has remained hidden among the trees, and only a few people have caught fleeting glimpses of it. One brave little girl comes face to face with this elusive being in The Sasquatch Medicine by eelonqa K harris. (The author spells her name in this stylized way.) Dakota is a thoughtful and caring child. So, when she hears that her grandmother’s feet ache, she volunteers to go looking for medicinal herbs to make a cure. With her trusty dog, Mima, she ventures into the forest. Dakota has heard about sasquatches, but she has never seen one. Things change when she hears a strange noise in the forest that night, and she encounters a huge hairy creature. What will happen to her now? Will she find the herbs her grandmother needs?

The unique cover design features a beautiful forest scene with the little girl and her dog facing an enormous sasquatch. In the title, the word “sasquatch” is emphasized with sticks tied together to form the shape of each letter. A clever raven is holding the letter “c” in its mouth. The various shades of green and brown create an appealing visual composition. This children’s comic book/graphic novel is illustrated in a rather unusual way. In each panel, the author created composite images with photos of scenery, animals, and dolls placed in different positions. The main themes of the story include adventure, nature, and First Nations culture. There is no violence or profanity in the text, but spirituality is implied.

I enjoyed the inclusion of some cultural elements from the Salish peoples. I know that the sasquatch legends hold great significance to the tribes of the Pacific Northwest. As presented in this story, the cryptid is thought to be a supernatural entity. I also appreciated the beautiful photos of animals and forest scenery. I give the author full points for creativity because instead of using drawings, she used a scrapbooking technique to illustrate the book. I can see how much work went into completing this publication. From the dolls’ clothes and hair to the formatting, many industries contributed to the creation of this book. It is also worth noting that the editing is exceptional. I did not find a single error in the text.

I only have a few suggestions to make. I would have appreciated if the names of the medicinal herbs were mentioned next to their photos. Additionally, it would have been nice if the author had described what the sasquatches ate in a particular scene. I am curious to know what a sasquatch diet consists of. I also think that referencing a specific sasquatch legend from a tribe would have been a good way to teach children about Salish history and traditions. Furthermore, even though Dakota was very careful, it seemed rather dangerous to send a young child into the forest by herself.

In conclusion, The Sasquatch Medicine by eelonqa K harris is an entertaining tale. Therefore, I award this book a rating of four out of four stars. Children will relish the simple yet exciting story. Anyone interested in folklore and Indigenous culture will also enjoy this publication. I have always been fascinated by cryptozoology and bigfoot, so this book instantly grabbed my attention. I look forward to reading more of this author’s work.

Thank you for the detailed review! Dakota reminds me of Dora and it sounds like an adventure in the wild with a purpose to search Sasquatch.🌿 But it is still scary for a young child to roam alone in a forest.

This was a children's book that talked about how Dakota, a caring child, went to the forest to get herbs for her grandmother but met a sasquatch that she has been hearing about for a long time but had never seen before. I like how the reviewer makes a few suggestions to make the book more interesting. Thanks for the great review.

I've never encountered scrapbook-style graphic novels before. After reading this, however, my interest is piqued. Thank you so much for the amazing review! Your description of how the book is structured made me not only interested in the book but also in its unique style.
