Review of Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula
R.F. Kristi's Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula brings a fresh dose of adventure, fun, and suspense that children will thoroughly enjoy.
After Missy is selected as a judge for a French patisserie competition in South Korea, the popular detective crew led by Inca joins her on this exciting trip. Missy also planned to introduce a new cheese to the audience. Nonetheless, the story would not be uneventful. The cheese going missing on their trip to South Korea and the danger of sabotage from a mischievous rival chef, as well as the case of reuniting friends, presented the perfect opportunity for Inca and her detective crew to put their skills to work once more. Will they be as successful as they have been in the previous books?
One thing I have always enjoyed about books in this series is the author's portrayal of the significance of family. In this book, the same theme is explored, as Inca introduces her loving family as usual. The togetherness within the family throughout the story is also admirable, and this is something children can learn from. It would also play a role in determining whether their missions would be successful or not.
I also enjoyed the subtle ways the author used the story to enlighten readers about South Korea, from the inclusion of a couple of South Korean names and their meanings to the characters' visit to the demilitarized zone, which is the border between North Korea and South Korea. Children will find this aspect of the book entertaining and educational.
Furthermore, the book is a bit too wordy for a children's book, in my opinion. Nonetheless, the author still employs some eye-catching illustrations at certain points of the story. The good thing about these illustrations is that it accurately captures the emotions of the characters throughout the story, especially when they had to infiltrate the demilitarized zone to reunite with a friend in North Korea. The suspense was palpable in this part of the book, but it was fun seeing the furry characters work together.
Besides the book's wordy nature, I did not find any other aspect I did not like. R.F. Kristi's Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is an exceptionally well-edited book. On that note, I rate this book four out of four stars. Children who love animals, especially cats, will love this book. I would also recommend it to kids between the ages of four and nine.
