Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventure Volume 1 is written by Catherine Anna Pepe. It covers the adventures of Mary Grace and Donny as they live with their grandparents in California. It was written in a third-person narrative.

Mr. and Mrs. Miller take their children, Mary Grace and Donny, to spend the day visiting the animals at the Sedgwick County Zoo. Then Donny gets lost and is found later when Mary Grace smartly figures out where he was. Mr. Miller was the priest and rector of St. James Episcopal Church for over ten years. He is transferred to Kenya, Africa, and sends Mary Grace and Donny to live with their grandparents in California. What will become of them in California?

With her description, Pepe brought to life the characters and scenes from the book. With each scene, the book unraveled, and it felt like I was taking a peek into someone’s life. I liked her writing style. It was engaging and informative. The book didn’t feel like it was a children’s book. In my opinion, it is both for adults and children. I also liked that as an adult reading this book, you can also take lessons from this book. It discusses the impact of parents’ behavior on their children. I loved how the Miller family treated Donny as an equal to Mary Grace, not just as a child with Down syndrome. The bond between Donny and Mary Grace was another thing I liked about this book.

I found nothing I disliked in this book, and it seems to have been professionally edited and proofread. I discovered no grammatical errors. Therefore, I rate this book four out of four stars. I’m not giving it anything because it was well written and thoroughly enjoyable. I recommend this book for children eight years old and older. It would make a great bedtime story.
