Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
One of the scariest things that children could go through is being separated from their parents. It wouldn’t matter whether it happened for a good or a bad reason. Mary Grace and her brother Donny find themselves in this situation when their parents leave for Kenya due to work obligations. The siblings end up living with their grandparents. Not only do they have to move to a different city, but they also have to change schools.
Mary Grace was pretty unhappy about these sudden changes in her life. Her new school was quite fine at first, her grandparents were very loving and present, but she still longed for her parents’ return. On the other hand, Donny was living his life to the fullest. However, a series of events happen in school that worsens Mary Grace’s reluctance to stay in California. Will she be resilient enough to stay?
Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine Anna Pepe is a children’s book that highlights Down Syndrome, bullying and solving mysteries. It is an excellent educational tool. It uses extremely creative, effective and enlightening measures to tackle the subjects of bullying and children with special needs. The author used easy and straightforward language to communicate to her readers. It is a fun and entertaining read given the puzzles and mysteries that are solved in the book.
I loved that the characters and the events in the book were inspired by real-life events. As a matter of fact, the author had a brother who had Down Syndrome. I also loved that the author made the children’s characters play integral parts in each of the critical parts of the story. For instance, Mary Grace played a huge role in handling bullying. There was nothing I disliked about the book.
This book had no errors at all. I would rate it 4 out of 4 stars. This is because it possesses everything that a children’s book should have: educative, fun and easy-to-read. I would recommend it to readers aged above 11 years because of its length.
