Review of Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is written by R.F. Kristy. Moi Inca, a Siberian kitty, also the head of the detective agency, travel along with his furry friends to South Korea with their human Mom. Mom has created a new cheese 'La Crème de la crème' known as 'the best or choicest cheese in the world.' The French cookery school, Cordon Bleu Cookery, has invited her to present her cheese and to present as one of the judges in the competition between South- and North Korean chefs. Amidst the culinary competition, Ye-Jun the sister of Ji longed for Bo-Mi, Ji's beloved Korean kitty. The animals' plot to cross the border from South Korea over to North Korea, believing it will be safer for them to cross instead of the humans who don't have the right documentation or visas required.
They start their trek late at night crossing the border with a few occasions where the guards come and pet the kitties as they cross over and back. They successfully find Bo-Mi and head back home surprising Ye-Jun by Bo-Mi's strange appearance. Ye-Jun finds it strange that Ji is nowhere to be found since she is always with Bo-Mi. Ye-Jun finds Ji who is in a state over Bo-Mi being lost, he fills her in that Bo-Mi is safe with him and she is immediately recovered and hurriedly scurries over to her station in the chef's competition ready to compete and conquer.
For a children's book, I found the storyline interesting and illustrative with unique images to express the story. I think it's great for kids to learn about countries and cultures from a young age to understand their importance better later in life. Respect and appreciation for animals have promoted factors in the book that I admire. I like that the text is written in a funky fond and the cover immediately catches your attention.
I did find some words in the text I believe some kids will struggle to understand. However, the book is still easy enough to read and follow. There is an overflow of characters that might confuse the children.
This children's book I was able to read without getting bored or annoyed. This is my first time reviewing a children's book and I am happy to rate it a four out of four stars. I liked how Kristy structured the writing style and the themes of the book.
I recommend Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula to children ages 6-10. The book has a writing style suitable for younger children. As a parent, I recommend reading it with or for your child.
