Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is the first of three books in the Grand Ma Gang Mysteries featuring her brother Donny. It is a quasi-fictional book based on a Down-syndrome boy, Donny, and his sister, Mary Grace. The book began with an adventurous note with the search for Donny at the zoo. Their parents, along with the community of Kansas, were incredibly helpful in finding him back.

Their life seemed almost perfect until their parents got a mission to go to Africa through the church. The children were sent to live with their grandparents in California for two years until their parents completed their ministerial work. At their new school, Mary Grace is faced with the issue of bullying. Will she be capable of dealing with the bullying, or will it be too much for her? Take a read to find out more.

The book was very simple to read and follow, with not too many complicated words. A well-read child can clearly follow the story. I also liked the colourful cover of the book. It has a very enticing and welcoming cover. There were many lessons learnt in the story, one being how to deal with being bullied. Another important point was that special children have feelings too and should be treated with love and respect. Parents can learn a lot of morals from this book so that they can be a good influence on their children.

However, I found the font too small for children to read, and colourful pictures within the book would have made it more inviting for young readers. This, nonetheless, did not take away from the overall enjoyment of the book. The book was professionally well-edited with only one error, and the author did a great job of narrating the story from a child’s perspective. Therefore, I would rate this book four out of four stars for the reasons listed above.

I would recommend this book to parents, children, and grandparents. I highly recommend that grandparents and parents read this book to younger children and explain the values they can learn from it. It will give their younger ones a positive outlook on life and how to treat others. Teachers and principals can also learn how bullying should be dealt with in schools by reading this book.
