Review of Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula, written by R.F Kristi, is a children’s book that follows a week in the life of Inca, a Siberian cat detective and head of the detective agency Inca and Company. The detective cat and her team, Fromage, Charlotte, Polo, Cara, Monk, and Terrace, were famous throughout London and had solved many mysteries together. During one of their meetings admiring the magnificent painting of a Siberian Tiger, their mum informed them that they would be taking a trip to South Korea with her to present her cheese at the French patisserie competition held by Le Cordon Bleu, a reputable French cookery school. On this trip, they meet Enzo, their mum’s greatest rival, and he makes several attempts to ruin her cheese presentation, which Inca and her team prevent. They also meet Ye-Jun on their visit to Korea and begin to solve the mystery of the regal cat portrait in his living room. We join Inca and her detective team on several adventures in this book.
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is an engaging book that would be fun for young readers. Despite being a lighthearted book for kids, it is very informative on Korea, the separation between South Korea and North Korea, and stereotypes of Korean people. The author emphasized the importance of being supportive of family and friends.
What I liked the most about this book was how well-written and edited it was. The undercover mission of Inca and her team was fun to follow and made me wonder if my pets listen to my conversations and help me out at times. Fromage, his love for cheese, and his support for their mum in her cheese presentation were funny to read. One of the best things about this book was Inca’s confidence and pride in being an elegant Siberian cat. Her curiosity about everything reminded me of children and how perceptible they can be.
I loved everything about this book and found nothing to dislike. Although it seemed a little long for a children’s book, I do not think that will affect how enjoyable reading the book would be. I will be rating this book a 4 out of 4 stars because of how well-written it is, and I look forward to reading it with my nieces.
I recommend this book to children who love to read about animals. Children between the ages of 7 to 12 will enjoy and benefit from this book because it encourages confidence and emphasizes the importance of family. Adults who enjoy reading children’s books will find this book fun to read.
