Mary Grace’s worse nightmare comes to a reality when her parents tell her of their plan to go to Africa on a missionary trip while she together with her brother, Donny, will have to go to California for two good years! The thought of leaving her home, friends, and parents behind to restart another life in California with her grandparents gives her an uneasy feeling. Whilst in California, the mystery-solving Mary Grace is faced with a mystery of her own. A mystery that poses a threat to her happiness, her brother, and her best friend Penelope.

Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures is an interesting children’s book with lots of moral lessons to be learned. I love how it teaches kids to be kind, respectful, loving, and show empathy towards their colleagues. In this interesting novel, Catherine Anna Pepe creatively points out how kids should react when faced with challenging problems and also the type of people they should trust to help them out with their problems. An example can be cited from when Mary Grace told her granny about the problem she faced at school and how thoughtful she was at handling the problem.

I also admired the author’s use of simple words in the book, which drives home the message behind the book very clearly for kids to understand. Catherine Anna Pepe’s way of finally unveiling the mystery that bothered Mary Grace so much also gave the book an interesting feel, giving the reader a reason to finish reading the book to the very end.

With the well-crafted moral lessons in the book helping children to recognize behaviors that should be frowned upon and those that are to be commended in society, there was absolutely nothing I disliked about the book.

I rate Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures 4 out of 4 stars because it was incredibly well-edited. With the language very clear and understandable and most importantly, the tons of moral lessons packed in it, I think it deserves this rating.

I recommend this book to children, and parents or class teachers of children. It will help in shaping the lives of children and teach them the best ways to handle societal problems around them as well.
