Do you know people who see color in everything? You know, those that dance with trees to the tune of the wind, chase after butterflies, smile at flies, and easily talk to a seemingly angry stranger as though they have known each other all their lives? I don’t. A real one anyway because Donny from Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is such a person.

Donny exudes joy! He loves animals at the local zoo (especially penguins), making friends, high-fives, his family, eating snickerdoodles, and, most importantly, his marble collection! Did I mention that he has Down Syndrome and an ever-present smile?

Mary Grace, Donny’s older sister, wants nothing more than to see her family together and Donny’s infectious smile. So, when their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miller, inform Mary Grace that their church had chosen them for two-year missionary work in Africa and that Mary Grace and Donny would have to move in with their grandparents in California, the ten-year-old is not in the least bit pleased. She is just not ready to be separated from her parents and friends and leave all those memories in Wichita. While Donny welcomes this opportunity for more adventure, Mary Grace would have to “suck it up” (my words) for the sake of her parents and Donny. Anyway, who said California zoos do not have penguins (I mean, nowadays, it is possible to meet a polar bear enjoying the breeze from somewhere in the Burj Al Arab, right?)? The adventure awaiting Mary Grace was unlike any she had had!

I liked everything about this work! The author wrote the narration from the third person’s perspective, using easy-to-understand English. Her description of places was detailed enough to give readers a mental picture of scenes without getting lost. Additionally, the editing was exceptional, as I did not encounter any errors in the entire book. Therefore, I don’t think readers will face any difficulties as far as understanding this plot goes.

What I loved most about Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures is its educational attribute. It teaches parenting (Mr. and Mrs. Miller’s way versus Mr. Green’s), honesty and the lack of it (Tiffany), courage and friendship (Mary Grace, Penelope, and Tiffany), and most importantly, about the capability of people with disabilities. I also enjoyed this book’s investigative side, which centered around Mary Grace and the Grandma Gang (you’ll know them), because to solve a problem, they did not just treat the symptoms but went after the causative agent!

I rate this book four out of four stars. I recommend it to parents with children not exceeding thirteen years old. Also, older people may get this title when they want to bond with their grandkids (not exceeding the age above).
