Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures is an adventure children’s book written by Catherine A. Pepe. The story follows Mary Grace and her family. After her parents are selected to go to Africa as missionaries for the Episcopal Church, Mary Grace and her brother Donny move to their grandparents' home in California to live. Catherine spins the story of how Mary Grace and Donny learn to love California despite a few scary challenges along the way, such as going to a new elementary school and being bullied because Donny has Down syndrome. The author has added a mystery and detective element to it with the portrayal of the Grandma Gang, who are mystery-solving grandmas. Read Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures to learn how Mary Grace and the Grandma Gang solve the mystery of the anonymous bully.

Catherine teaches kids how to treat people with disabilities with kindness and equality. And the fact that 10 percent of the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to the Olympics is an exemplary humanitarian gesture set by the author. The book tells several facts about people with Down syndrome in a non-preachy way. This book can act as an educational and interesting read for elementary school kids to inculcate kindness and is also helpful for kids who may face bullying or threats at school.

I love the story of the Grandma Gang; them taking charge of their situation was amazing. The mystery-solving part was very appealing to me. Adding to that, the emotional maturity of Mary Grace by the book's end is something adults can learn from.

There was nothing to dislike in this book, and the editing was flawless. So I rate Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures 4 out of 4 stars. This children’s book was perfectly edited and is perfect for kids of any age. It teaches kindness through a story filled with suspense. I was hooked on the book from start to finish.

I recommend this book to children of any age. Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures is a strong, character-driven, suspenseful book. Whoever reads this book will enjoy it and learn to be kind like Mary Grace.

The author beautifully portrays Donny's exuberant personality through his endearing habit of embracing and high-fiving not only his family but also strangers. One particular heartwarming moment nearly brought tears of joy to my eyes. It was when Donny, engrossed in reading his favorite book on the plane, inspired others to join him in the literary adventure. As they disembarked, they couldn't resist sharing a celebratory high-five with him. Great review
