[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of ""Daddy, What is Racism?"" by Jenny O. White.]
Racism is a disgusting act that dehumanizes and causes great pain to another human just because of the color of their skin. Daddy, What is Racism? by Jenny O. White is a beautifully written book that talks about a child who was racially abused. Semaj asked Skylar if he could ride her bicycle, which she got for her sixth birthday. Skylar agreed, and Semaj started riding the bicycle. Skylar’s dad came back from answering a call and saw Semaj driving the bicycle. He held Semaj and claimed that he wanted to steal the bicycle because he was not like them. He called the police on Semaj. What happens to Semaj now?
Racism is still practiced by many today. It was sad to see a parent, Skylar’s father, trying to teach her such evil. This book will help teach children about the evil of racism and how bad it is. It will educate these children at a young age so that when they grow up, they will not be racists too. The author used flowing sentences and a beautiful storyline to convey the messages contained in this book. The diagrams are colorful and will draw the attention of every child.
I disliked Skylar’s dad. He was racist, and I was even more pissed when he was not punished for being racist. It is just a clear depiction of what happens in society today. I could begin to think of the trauma Semaj must have passed through as the handcuffs were on his hands. I hope that this book will reach and teach its readers that racism is bad. Finally, I found punctuation errors while reading this book.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because of the great and important message that it passes. I found a few errors, and it was professionally edited.
I recommend this book to children between the ages of 3 and 11. Teachers and parents should also get this book for their students and children. This book will help them understand how bad racism is.
