Mary Grace is a ten-year-old girl with a five-year-old brother named Donny; Donny has down syndrome. Donny and Mary Grace are best friends, and Mary Grace is always looking out for Donny. In Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe, Mary Grace and Donny move to California with their grandparents. Mary Grace deals with all the emotions that come with moving cities and attending a new school. California brings new mysteries for Mary Grace to solve. She solves her many mysteries with the help of her grandmother and some new friends.

Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures is an excellent book about children’s emotions and experiences as they move. This book also talks about special needs people and explains them in a way that children can understand. Her knowledge of special needs kids, especially ones with down syndrome, is obvious because Catherine Pepe can explain how Donny thinks and processes information. Pepe addresses bullying in a realistic situation and also explains how bullying is serious and can happen in different forms. The book’s overall tone is positive, but it does not ignore the sad and challenging times the characters undergo.

There are no negative aspects to this book. Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures is a great story that appears to be exceptionally well-edited.

I rate Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures five out of five stars. Catherine Pepe wrote this book with well-developed characters and a delightful storyline. There were no grammatical errors or mistakes in the book.

I recommend this book to grade school-age boys and girls. Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures is the perfect book for grandparents to read to their grandchildren. Young readers will learn about people with special needs and how to deal with their own emotions while trying to solve the mystery with Mary Grace. Even adults could learn from Donny and Mary Grace. I genuinely enjoy this book and believe many others will as well.
